Choosing The Right Ingredients
Choosing the right ingredients is very important. The ingredients facilitate the benefits of the shampoo. The ingredients I chose are therapeutic and natural. The surfactants chosen are certainly a mouth full and sound scary. Scary they are not- in fact, they serve a purpose. The naturally derived surfactants create a pH balance designed to allow the cuticle scales to lie flat, protecting the cortex which makes the hair appear shiny and smooth. Other options like castile soap shampoos ranges between a pH of 9 to 11. This high pH causes the cuticle cells of hair to swell up and get rougher which can leave your hair looking dull and lifeless. Additionally, castile soap often leave “soap scum” on your hair, leaving behind deposits of calcium and magnesium.
*Other ingredients are defined below because of their curative beneficial properties.
Surfactant- is a blend of words “surface active agent”. Surfactants are generally organic compounds that are amphilphilic, which means they contain both hydrophobic (stick to grease and dirt) groups and hydrophilic (stick to water) groups.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate, Sodium Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate are all surfactants derived from coconut, coconut oil and or coconut and palm oils, read on….
Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate
Derived from coconut and palm oils; a safe, skin-friendly surfactant (foaming agent) for both skin and hair. This mild plant derived surfactant creates a rich, luxurious lather that effectively removes surface oil, dirt and bacteria, without stripping or drying sensitive skin. Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate is also hydrophilic. This means it is attracted to water, which enables it to dissolve more readily in water, thus providing superior rinse ability.
Sodium Cocamidopropyl Betaine
Derived from coconut; safe, skin-friendly cleanser for both skin and hair that effectively removes surface oil, dirt and bacteria, without stripping or drying sensitive skin
Disodium Laureth Sulfocuccinate
Derived from coconut oil and lauryl alcohol; very mild cleanser and foaming agent, excellent for sensitive skin
Lauryl Alcohol
Is a fatty alcohol. It has a floral odor. It can be obtained from palm kernel or coconut oil fatty acids and methyl esters by reduction
Tetrasodium EDTA
Water softner. A bonding agent that links with minerals to prevent them from causing microbial growth.
Phenoxyethanol
Derived from sage essential oil; safe and effective food grade preservative.
Citric Acid - Vitamin C
Derived from citrus fruit; natural food grade preservative which maintains proper pH balance in products. Alpha-hydroxy and astringent.
Aloe vera
Has healing soothing, antibacterial and moisturising properties. It is used to relieve burning, itching, minor cuts and first and second degree burns.
Essential Oils
Essential oils have a long tradition of providing a variety of therapeutic benefits. Many of these traditionally known benefits, have been confirmed through modern scientific research. The use of essential oils in a cosmetic will have an antiseptic and antimicrobial action, as well as a healing and soothing effect on the skin. Essential oils help the skin and hair detoxify, drain, heal and regenerate
Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein
A protein from wheat which has been turned partly into water through hydrolysis. Proteins are the nitrogen carrying constituents of living cells. Protein treatments are said to be beneficial to hair and skin. They add gloss, body and luster to hair. Proteins consist of giant chains of amino acids, the building blocks of life. The amino acid chains are joined chemically by a peptide bond. Plant proteins have excellent skin compatibility and deposit a protective film on the skin and hair. The film is smoothing and moisturizing.
Tocopherol (Vitamin E)
Acts as a free radical scavenger, hinders the oxidizing process in the skin and promotes soft and supple skin. As an antioxidant it defends the skin. Helpful in reducing scars and promotes healing. Acts as a natural preservative for products. Obtained by the vacuum distillation of edible vegetable oils. Vitamin E oil is an emollient. According to the AMA’s committee on Cutaneous Health emollients do help make the skin feel softer and smoother, reduce roughness, cracking and irritation. And may possibly retard the fine wrinkles of aging. As an antioxidant it is believed to remove the free radicals that cells produce. Free radicals have been associated with skin cancer and premature skin aging due to sun exposure. Some experts believe antioxidants are the most vital weapons in the fight against aging. Most of the damage of our skin is caused by a free-radical assault from smoke, pollution and UV rays. Free radicals then turn the oils of our skin rancid, which damages the collagen. Collagen is the protein fibers that serve as the building blocks of our skin. Antioxidants are used in skin care products to neutralize free radicals before they ravage the skin.
QUESTIONS
1. Why does it take so many surfactants to make one shampoo?
For OMHH Fabulously Therapeutic Vegan Hair and Body Wash, it takes more than one surfactant to create the gentle lather.
2. Why is there a warning label on the product?
The FDA requires all products that are bubble bath, soaking products, etc. to adhere to their warning sign regulations.
Lamin Terms: There is a warning label on this product and other products alike because it is a product that is used on the skin. As a bathing product, people tend to sit for long periods of time (prolonged use). Prolong use may cause irritation to the private areas. The key word is may.
*Note: keep this in mind- essential oils are natural but may not be applied directly to the skin (must be diluted) because they may irritate the skin.
3. Can I use this product daily?
Absolutely, this is a natural, organic and vegan product that has been thoroughly tested. Like any other product, I would recommend if there is an adverse reaction to this product, discontinue use and see a doctor.
